Decide if I need to use a REO Input Choke with a Drive
- Drive Application EMC (PDF 1449KB)
The use of an input choke when used with a frequency drive has several benefits, reduction of harmonics and protection of the drive against transient voltages at the input side.
In addition to this the use of a Drive within a machine or system constitutes a Power Drive System (PDS) and as such conformity to EN61800-3 should be considered. The drive manufactures installation guidelines should be adhered to but these are usually based on single drive applications without additional circuitry. In reality a PDS is made up from other equipment and maybe more than one drive and for this reason, harmonic reduction methods, such as a REO Input Choke should be considered.
REO publish a guide on EN61800-3, standard which relates specifically to drive installations and it can be viewed below.← Back to FAQs
