Do REO Chokes have airgaps and why is this beneficial?

Yes they do.

They allow high storage of energy whilst improving the linearity of the choke and reducing the likelihood of saturation and improving the usable inductance when used in the application.

REO often use more than one air-gap to distribute the losses to ensure that ‘hotspots’ do not occur, which may cause insulation failures.
