Braking resistors

Not all braking resistors are the same -

REOhm is the answer for modern inverter technology

When an electric motor works as a generator (electromotive brake), the braking resistor protects the machine from a voltage rise in the DC link. At the same time, the reduction of current leads to a speed reduction of the engine and helps to brake the machine.

REO braking resistors achieve a better heat dissipation and better dynamic behaviour by filling heat conducting material surrounding the wound body.
REO resistors are short-circuit proof and self-extinguishing. They guarantee a high level of operational safety and are overload-proof in case of short-term loads for your applications (e.g. wind power engineering, railway engineering and automotive engineering).

  • REOHM series 154

    Max. continous power: 200 W

    BW 156
    • Resistance values: 2,2 - 500 Ohm
    • Continuous power: 50 - 200 W
    • max. operating voltage: 900 V

The braking resistor REOHM 154 protects the machine from a voltage rise in the intermediate circuit, if an electric machine operates as a generator (Electromotive brake). The current reduces also the speed of the machine.

The serie REOHM 154 is available as braking resistor (series BW) or as charging resistor (series R).

As 154 R (Charging resistor, damping resistor, filter resistance, etc.)

The charging resistor is a current limiting resistor for the charging and discharging of capacitors and limitates for example the current flowing into the intermediate circuit capacitor inrush current. For this the device must be designed for a high single pulse energy and nominal voltage. The inductance of the resistor contributes to limit the inrush current, so wirewound resistors are the right choice.

    Typical Applications:

    • Drive Technology

    • Renewable energy

    • Electromobility

    Maximum energy with minimum space

    • The compact design enables the use in all applications where
little space is available (for example in cabinet and frequency converter)

    • Unity-Version can be assem-bled as low-profile and upright

    • In case of failure of resistor, this will become highly resis-tive

    • Test voltage: 2,5 kV AC (at 900 V rated voltage)

    • With temperature switch

    • Cover for protection against high surface temperatures

  • REOHM series 155

    Max. continous power: 3.000 W

    BW 156
    • Resistance values: 0,5 - 1440 Ohm
    • Continuous power: 500 - 3500 W
    • max. operating voltage: 900 - 4200 V

Braking resistor for drives with frequency converters of medium to high power.
Mounting inside and outside the control cabinet is possible.

    • degree of protection: IP20 / IP65 / IP66

    • test voltage: 2.5 kV AC

    • ambient temperature: 10+40 ºC

    • other services on request

    • other fastenings on request

  • REOHM series D 330

Watercooled, max. continous power: 60.000 W

    BW 156
    • Resistance values: 1 - 100 Ohm
    • Continuous power: 15000 - 60000 W
    • max. operating voltage: 800 V

The REO braking resistor D 330 converts excess braking energy into useful heat and is thus ideally suitable for electrical or hybrid drives.  The water cooling makes an additional space saving of up to 88% possible as compared to a traditional air-cooled braking resistor.  As an extra feature, the resistor can easily be connected with drip-free quick fasteners. Due to a very high performance even in confined spaces the BWD 330 is ideal for the use in wind power technology, too. Harsh environmental conditions, such as salt spray are no problem with the high protection degree up to IP 69K.
